Minor earthquake in northwest Mississippi this morning

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake near Tunica, Mississippi, Monday morning.

The weak, 2.3 magnitude trembler was about 10 miles underground, and it is unlikely anyone felt it above ground.

This is the second earthquake of the year in Mississippi. The first was in late February near Booneville.

Generally, earthquakes that register below 4 or 5 on the Richter scale are considered minor and cause little to no damage. At 2.5 or less, it’s likely the quake wasn’t felt at all, although it did register on seismographs.

Mississippi sits in the New Madrid seismic zone, which also runs through Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee. Most geologists consider the zone dormant, though some expect a major event some time soon.
