Two years of flood and mud muck up city front – VIDEO

They call it the muddy Mississippi for a reason. Normally the mud left behind at city front from the rise and fall of the Mississippi River in the Yazoo Diversion Canal is washed away by natural elements or the fire department. The floods of 2018, 2019 and the early part of 2020 have kept the water level high until now. It hasn’t been this low since Sept. 9, 2018.
Because of that, a large amount of mud has been deposited at city front. Now that the river has dropped and is sitting around 16 feet, that mud is visible and blocking the launch ramp for boats.
Alex Monsour, Jeff Richardson and Skipper Whittington with the city of Vicksburg were at city front looking for the best way to get rid of the mud.
Up until a couple of weeks ago the fire department was blowing the mud back into the channel with their high pressure fire hose. However, the rapid drop of the water has revealed a deep pile of compacted mud that the fire hose won’t move. A bulldozer was able to move some mud, but the loading ramp and its steep incline necessitate a different approach.
Enter a local engineer who has developed a machine that will move the mud from that steep incline. The work should take only a couple of days to complete, restoring the boat launch for use.
