Chicken wings and marijuana tossed over the fence at a Mississippi prison

The Mississippi Department of Corrections says an electronic leg bracelet led to the arrest of three individuals who were attempting to smuggle contraband into a prison, including drugs and barbecue chicken wings.

The three in custody are Naje Wilson, James Roberson and Keshun Chambers. All three are being charged with drug possession, trafficking and introducing illegal contraband into a prison.

The confiscated items, which included four pounds of marijuana, 20 pounds of tobacco and rolling paper, 38 cell phones and seven pounds of chicken wings, were stuffed into footballs and thrown over the South Mississippi Correctional Institution fence around 1:30 a.m. Dec. 7.

Wilson, who is out on bond on a murder charge, was wearing a court-ordered ankle bracelet which detected his whereabouts at the prison and led to the arrest.

MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain said prison officials are cracking down on smuggling.

“We’re choking off their operations they’ve used for decades to control prisons,” Cain told The Associated Press. “Now we’re installing and using the latest security systems, drones overhead, and cameras and scanners everywhere.”

MDOC confirmed that it was the chicken wings being thrown over the fence that hit a sensor and alerted correction officers to rush to the area.
