Dr. June Chiplin Thomas, the mother of former Vicksburg Junior High School football coach Eric Chiplin, “Coach Chip”, accepted her late son’s recognitions and honors on Friday.

Coach Eric Chiplin was recognized at the Vicksburg High School pep rally where Dr. June was in attendance along with other family members of the Chiplin family.

VHS Executive Principal Dr. Tameka Hyland expressed a few words about how Chiplin loved his Gator family.

Coach Chip’s High School football coach Alonzo Stevens also showed up to honor his former player who passed away in 2021.

Back in October, the Vicksburg Daily News chose to honor Coach Chip by naming the VDN Junior High Coach of the Year Award in his honor.

Friday morning was filled with emotions but in a positive way. Dr. June knows that her son’s name will always be kept alive with this recognition and with all of the kids he coached in the past.

The Chiplin family will also be offering a $1,000 scholarship in honor of Eric Chiplin and it will go to a student who will attend an HBCU.

VDN would like to thank the Vicksburg-Warren  School District and the VHS administration staff for allowing us to honor Eric Chiplin and present his mother with a special plaque.
