Two arrested in connection with death of five-year-old in Gulfport

The Gulfport Police Department has arrested two people in connection with the death of a five-year-old child.

On April 14, police responded to a medical emergency involving the child in the 3300 block of 39th Avenue. The child was later taken to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

As the investigation progressed, it was revealed that the child had suffered from blunt-force trauma.

The mother of the child, Lachelle R. Washington, has been charged with child deprivation of necessaries with substantial harm. Her acquaintance, Denzel J. Blakely, has been charged with capital murder.

Blakely is currently being held without bond, while Washington’s bond has been set at $50,000.
