Alcorn defeated No. 1 seed Alabama State on Thursday

GULFPORT, Miss. | Alabama State University softball rallied from a 5-0 deficit only to fall 6-5 in 10 innings to Alcorn State University to bow out of the 2023 SWAC Softball Tournament on Thursday at the Gulfport Sportsplex on Thursday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alcorn State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Kennedy Terry singled and scored when Genise Wells reached on a fielder’s choice.
- Four runs crossed the plate for Alcorn State in the top of the fourth.
- Kristian Edwards worked a leadoff walk and came in to score on a Marsha Hunt infield single, and Jillian Walters scored on a Kristian Edwards triple to make the score 3-0.
- Genise Wells reached on a fielder’s choice to plate a run, and a run scored on a Marsha Hunt ground out to give the Lady Braves a 5-0 lead.
- The Hornets used a four-run fifth to climb back and trail 5-4. Kiana Parrish led off with a single. Lauryn Maher pinch ran for Parrish and would score when she stole home after a Madison Myers single. Myers scored on a Kindall DeRamusRBI ground out, and Alexia Denby hit a two-run home run.
- The Lady Hornets put the tying run at third in the bottom of the sixth before a foul out and a strikeout ended the threat.
- Alabama State put the tying run at third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Alana Scottdelivered a one-out double to get into scoring position and moved to third on a Denby groundout. Scott would score to tie the game 5-5 when Zoee Disroe struck out and reached on a wild pitch to keep the inning going.
- Alabama State loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth. DeRamus beat the throw home on a Brook Ramsey grounder to the pitcher, but the play got turned by replay. Alcorn State would get out of the inning with a fly-out.
- The Lady Braves had the bases in the top of the 10th inning and would take a 6-5 lead on a Terry infield single to the shortstop.
- Alabama State would line into a double play with one out in the bottom of the 10th to end the game.

- Oliva Brown () gave up one run on four hits over 6.2 innings in relief of starter Bailey Greenlee as the pitcher of record for Alabama State.
- Alexia Veamoi (2-3) worked 3.0 scoreless with a strikeout to earn the win in relief for Alcorn State.

- Alabama State broke the school record for wins in a season with 30.
- Dendy home run was her 15th and the most homers in a season since Meagan Dixon hit 14 home runs in 2014.
- Denby went 2-for-5 with two RBI and runs scored.
