Highway 61 South is now back in service after a gas line rupture earlier on Friday.

At around 10:30 a.m., a large gas leak was reported on 61 South, south of Lynn’s Welding at Letourneau Road.

Reports state a line was struck and ruptured as power poles were being installed in the area.

The odor of gas was reported to have been so strong, vehicles in the area were abandoned.

As of 2:50 p.m., both lanes are back open.
