Archer named as the VDN Co-Head Track Coach of the Year
Vicksburg High School’s Shaun Archer has been named the VDN Co-Head Track Coach of the Year, alongside Corey Wilson Sr.
Archer:
Archer led the Gators to a successful track season in 2023, during which many of his athletes advanced to the state meet.
“It went very well. There were some events that I thought we would’ve advanced to the state meet, and we didn’t, but there were also events that I didn’t think we wouldn’t advance in, but we did, so overall it was great,” Archer said.
The Gators’ season was filled with highlights, one of which was Tyler Henderson winning a gold medal at the state meet under Archer’s leadership.
“Seeing that made me feel like everything was well worth it and it’s still unreal,” Archer added.
First-timer Malachi Drake advanced to North State in the Discus. Young athletes like Shaun Michael Archer and Maurice Taylor also advanced significantly in their events.
VHS showed marked improvement in the field areas in 2023, especially in the distance, triple jump, long jump, and discus where they once struggled.
Being consistent is something Archer preached to his team daily, and they embraced those words, which is evident from the successful outcome of their season.
“I would always tell them don’t take having talent over hard work for granted because a lot of people think they can get away with their talent, but it mostly takes hard work,” Archer said.
Archer has been coaching track for 26 years, and this marks his second consecutive year winning this award.
“This lets me know that I’m doing something right and I appreciate the attention. I’m just looking forward to seeing the program grow and we’re aiming for that overall championship,” Archer added.
