The flood waters are back on the rise.

Over the next 10-14 days, the Mississippi River will rise up to one and a half feet. Heavy rainfall the past two weeks has resulted in the ground being saturated again.  The creeks, bayous, and tributaries have filled back up.  With the river rising there is nowhere for the water to go.  That means the Backwater areas are going to remain covered with water since the water level of the Yazoo river will not drop until early May.

The Backwater (landside) is at 95.72’ and the riverside is at 94.82’.  The slow rise over the next couple of days will cause the riverside to rise.  The water level at the peak of the flood crested at 97.2 feet and covered 512,000 acres of land.  That includes 208,000 acres of cropland.  The flooding began in January and caused the gates at Steele Bayou to be closed on February 15th.  Homeowners, game hunters, and farmers have seen their fortunes diminish in what is becoming a historically long flood.
