Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. has been accused of trying to sweep an issue with the city’s fire chief under the rug.

Vicksburg Fire Chief Craig Danczyk made a post on social media that some saw as insensitive to the plight of Black Lives Matter. The post ignited a social media firestorm with some calling for the chief’s termination.

“If there is any question whether or not I stand with this fire chief, I stand with him,” Flaggs said vehemently during Thursday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. “If it takes me being defeated because I stand for what is right, so it be.”

The Mayor went on to say the issue will be settled at the July 6 meeting of the board.

Numerous issues regarding the city’s social media policy and how it applies have been studied by the board and city officials. The mayor indicated in a prior meeting there would have to be changes to the policy.

A search of the Vicksburg municipal code did not show any results for media or social media. The Vicksburg Daily News has requested a copy of the policy from city attorney Nancy Thomas.
