Five-star basketball player chooses HBCU over other top universities

Five-star basketball player Makur Maker has decided to play basketball at Howard University instead of other top programs in the country.

Maker, who is one of the top players in Arizona, made the announcement Friday on Twitter.

I was the 1st to announce my visit to Howard & other started to dream “what if”. I need to make the HBCU movement real so that others will follow. I hope I inspire guys like Mikey Williams to join me on this journey. I am committing to Howard U & coach Kenny Blakeney #MakerMob

Makur moved to California in 2015 where he averaged 14.7 points and 7.9 rebounds while shooting 73% on 2-pointers last spring. He turned down scholarships from top schools such as Kentucky, Memphis and UCLA.

The debate on whether black athletes should take their talents to HBCUs — Historically Black Colleges and Universities — came about after the death of George Floyd.
