The Mississippi Flag Commission has outlined a three-step elimination process to select the one flag design to present the state Legislature Sept. 1.

To date, more than 1,000 designs have been submitted for consideration to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, WLBT reports.

In the first step, the commission will review all the submissions and each of the nine commissioners will select 25 designs to move to the second round. In the second step, each commissioner will narrow their choices to 10. The third step will further narrow the choices to five.

Those final five will be displayed on the MDAH website for a brief period for public comment and may also be manufactured to get a better sense of how the designs will look in a final product.

“The public can indicate their favorites,” Katie Blount, MDAH director, told WLBT. “We’ll vet it with our staff at archives and history, but once we post the comments, everybody will be able to see them including the commissioners.”

The submitted designs and the commissioner’s choices will be displayed on the MDAH website beginning Monday, Aug. 3.

If you would like to submit a design, the deadline is Saturday, Aug. 1. For more information, visit the MDAH website.
