Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. will recommend to the Board of Mayor and Alderman to change the pay rates of entry level officer from $14.75 per hour to $16.12 per hour.

Apart from the increased pay rates for entry level officers, Flaggs also mentioned he will recommend of 5% raise across the board for anyone who is under the civil service banner, including firemen. All other city employees who are not civil service will be under the category of a 3% raise.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the officers and health care workers have been continuing serve under increasingly difficult conditions. Many in the community have expressed the need of a pay increase.

At the meeting, Flaggs and Northward Alderman Michael Mayfield, Sr. both agreed that lowering the cost of funerals held at the City Auditorium is the right thing to do during this time.

“We are going to lower the cost to half price and there will be no repast so people will be able to have funerals at 10 and at 2 and be able to sanitize the auditorium before,” Flaggs said. “We can give something back.”

Lowering the cost for funerals will be for everyone, not just victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.
