The statewide burn ban was lifted yesterday as heavy rain inundated Central Mississippi.

As of 8:45 a.m. today, 12 counties were still be under burn bans as much of the state was in the midst of a drought event due to an extremely hot and dry August and September. They are: Adams, Attala, Clay, Franklin, Jasper, Jefferson, Kemper, Lee, Tallahatchie, Wayne, Webster and Yalobusha counties.

The late summer and early fall weather left many areas of the state with a seven to eight-inch rainfall deficit for the year even as the state saw high amounts of rain during the spring and early summer. Combined with the Mississippi River flood, the South Delta was especially hard hit.

Yesterday’s rainfall didn’t alleviate all the drought conditions across the state, but it came as a welcome relief to many.
