What Are You're Voting On? (Initiative 26)
]]>
Initiative 26 – “The Personhood Amendment” This initiative, if passed, will amend the Mississippi Constitution to define the word “person” or “persons” to include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning, or the functional equivalent thereof. We feel that we need to clear the air about this proposed amendment. There are some very misleading advertisements in support of this initiative. There are several signs that imply that passing the initiative will make abortions illegal. This is not true! Passing the initiative will open the door to lawmakers to pass such a law, but it will not make anything legal or illegal. There are also implications that the amendment will “stop cloning.” This is also not true and can be substantiated by reading the wording of the amendment. It will include cloned embryos in the definition of “person” or “persons.” There are also some ads appearing that say that passing the initiative will make birth control illegal, make health care less accessible for pregnant women and more. These claims, much like the pro-26 claims, are purely speculation. This amendment will only change the definition of the word “person” (or “persons”) as it is used in our state’s constitution, that’s all. Nothing more, nothing less.
