Vicksburg Junior High students competed in the annual spelling bee Wednesday, Dec. 16.

Bee coordinator Mary Ann Peoples led the contestants through 10 rounds, testing their spelling and vocabulary prowess, before seventh grader Marquis Knight was crowned the champion.

Knight claimed his victory by spelling the word “billion” correctly. He is now focused on studying for the district competition in January.

Classmates Peyton McGee and Aiden Moore finished second and third respectively.

“I’m so very proud of our participants — all young men this year,” Peoples said in a Facebook post. “It truly warmed my heart on this chilly day to watch them focus and try their hardest to win!”

Keith Wolfe and Monica Williams served as volunteer judges for the event.
