Man and dog rescued after boat malfunction at Yazoo Canal
Last updated:
A young man and his dog narrowly escaped danger when their boat malfunctioned and sank in the Yazoo Canal, with a passing vessel coming to their timely rescue.
At around 4:30 p.m., emergency responders were quickly on the scene following a boat incident at the city front.
According to Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace, A young man, traveling south in the Yazoo Canal with his dog, experienced some sort of malfunction with the boat, causing it to spin out of control and toss the man and his dog overboard. The boat immediately sank.
Luckily for the man and his dog, help was nearby.
“A second boat came along and picked him and the dog up and brought him to the bank,” said Pace.
Pace explained that given the depth of the water and the nature of the accident, recovering the sunken outboard boat poses a significant challenge. It’s currently resting in a depth of about 30 to 40 feet.
“We are going to notify the Coast Guard. It should not be any navigation hazard,” explained Pace.
Neither the boater or his dog reported any injuries. The Fish and Wildlife department and the Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
