Former Ole Miss football legend and NFL player Allen Brown passed away Monday at the age of 76 after a lengthy illness.

His son, Tim Brown, now pastor at Vicksburg’s First Presbyterian Church, played at Ole Miss in the late 80s. Another of Brown’s sons, Burkes, played in the early ’90s. Grandson Ben Brown, who graduated from St. Aloysius High School in Vicksburg, will be playing his third year of football as an offensive lineman at Ole Miss next fall.

At Natchez High School, Allen Brown was first-team All Big Eight Conference which led him to receive a scholarship from Ole Miss. He lettered in three sports in high school: football, basketball and track.

Brown was a standout player at the University of Mississippi, where he played tight end in the early 1960s. Brown helped Ole Miss to a 22-6-3 record and numerous bowl games. The Rebels went 10-0 in 1962 and were ranked No. 1.

In 1966 and ’67, Brown was a part of legendary Super Bowl-winning Green Bay Packers. Brown played in 19 games before suffering a career-ending injury in 1967.

The Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame inducted Brown in 1989, and he entered the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Visitation will be at the Jefferson Street United Methodist Church in Natchez on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m., with the funeral service following immediately thereafter.
