Stirgus Sr. Honored
James E. Stirgus Sr. has served the citizens of the City of Vicksburg and Warren County with honor and distinction for five decades. On July 5, the city recognized Stirgus for his service by renaming Marcus Street as James E. Stirgus Sr Street.
From 1958 to 1962, Stirgus was the assistant principal at Rosa A. Temple High School, and from 1963 to 1973, he served as the school’s principal. He was assistant superintendent, and then superintendent of the Vicksburg School District from 1986 to 1987. Sturgis also served as the executive director of the Vicksburg Housing Authority where he was a staunch advocate for tenants’ rights and endeavored to ensure that every resident had equal and fair housing during his tenure.
In addition to education and housing, Stirgus continued community outreach as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and as a charter member of the fraternity’s local chapter. He was also involved in Port City Kiwanis, the American Legion and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
At a ceremony held on the corner of Halls Ferry and Marcus Street this morning, more than 100 people braved the summer heat to help celebrate this historic occasion.
Stirgus is married to the former Ms. Annie Anthony. They are the proud parents of four children and eight grandchildren
