Tommy’s BBQ to open on Highway 61 North
Last updated:
A new BBQ place is under construction on Highway 61 North.
Tommy Hughes, who is the son of Luke Hughes, owner of the Tomato Place, will be opening his own place in late March or early April. “We still have a lot to do. If it’s windy they can’t put on the roof, but we should be open by the end of the month,” said owner Tommy Hughes.
A Vicksburg native, Hughes grew up in town on Drummond Street.
Regarding the location on 61 North, “We think it’s the perfect place for BBQ. BBQ has always been really important to me. I don’t know, it’s an addiction I guess,” joked Hughes as he patted his stomach. “I love eating. When we were looking for something for Vicksburg we felt that the northside up here would be a nice niche for this end of town. We’ve got seafood, we’ve got Mexican food, we’ve got southern comfort food, and fast food.”
He purchased the land right next to Super Junior on 61 North, just south of Alfa Insurance.
The handicap-accessible building constructed there by Hughes features a new handicap-accessible restroom and even a remote kiosk for ordering if you don’t want to order at the window.
The Menu
The menu will feature beef brisket, beef ribs, pulled pork, baby back ribs, smoked turkey and all the sides. “In the beginning, we’re going to keep it real core. We’re small on the inside, we don’t have a lot of room,” explained Hughes. “We’re not going to get far away from meat. We’re not getting into fish or anything like that. It’s going to be strictly coming off the smoker.”
The Vicksburg Daily News will check back with Tommy’s BBQ when they’re closer to opening to update you on the event.
