The Vicksburg Fire Department added three new firefighters to its ranks Thursday morning.

In a brief pinning ceremony, Elwin Johnson, Jr., 28, Jonah Masterson, 24, and John McRight, 24, officially became part of the team.

Each of the young men had different reasons for becoming firefighters.

“I just wanted to serve my community best way I can,” Johnson said. “I never dreamed of being a firefighter. It’s something that just happened, but here I am—trying to be a hero, save lives.”

“Anything with hard work can be achievable,” he added.

For Masterson, it was a way to follow in his father and grandfather’s shoes, both of whom are doctors.

“I’ve seen all the hard work and dedication that goes into being a firefighter, and I like the medical side, also, so that kind of intrigued me,” he said.

McRight was fulfilling a childhood dream.

“Growing up, I always thought it was cool to watch the fire trucks go by, and I always wanted to do it.”

Congratulations to all.
