Vicksburg’s River Belles win championship game

The River Belles soccer team from Vicksburg won the U11 2nd division championship game Sunday in Brandon, Mississippi.
The team is made up of girls under the age of 11 from the Vicksburg area, coached by Daniel Sumerall.
The team had a busy weekend as they had to be in Brandon by 7 a.m. Sunday for two games, and they brought home victories in both matches. The River Belles defeated Madison 2-0 and tied with Tupelo with a 2-2 score and a win in a 3-1 shootout. They went on to beat Brandon 2-1 in the championship game.
Goalkeeper Sarah Stafford Smith had the most impressive performance in the games, helping her lead the team to victory. Addie Mullen, Avery Hern, Chloe Sumerall, Kennedy Smith, Addie G Clay, Allie Mason and Mary Clell Allred all scored Sunday for the River Belles.
Coach Sumerall was more than happy with his team’s performance and is excited to see where his girls are headed.
”I am proud that they overcame hot weather and challenging conditions and ended up playing really well,” Sumerall said. “We came out on top, and I enjoyed seeing the ladies improve as individuals and as a team.”
The River Belles now have a 4-1-1 record, and they will continue to represent the city of Vicksburg through November.
