Warren County’s retired state flags donated to Old Courthouse Museum
Last updated:
The Mississippi state flags that flew until Monday over the Warren County Courthouse were officially donated to the Old Courthouse Museum in Vicksburg Tuesday.
These flags will now join the other historic flags on display in the museum.
The flag that represented Mississippi since 1894 was the last state flag in the nation to include Confederate symbolism. The “stars and bars” have long been seen as a reminder of the oppression of slavery and Jim Crow to many people, while others argue it represents the state’s heritage.
The flag was official relegated to history June 30 when Gov. Tate Reeves signed a bill into law retiring the flag and creating a commission to come up with a new design. That design will be on the November ballot for the state’s voters to choose or reject. If the new design is rejected, commissioners will go back to the drawing board to present a new design to the Legislature in its 2021 session.
