Washington Redskins to retire the team name and logo

After going through a thorough review of their team name, the Washington Redskins have decided to retire the team name.

The announcement came Monday morning when the team issued a statement to the press.

“Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review,” the team said in a statement.

“Dan Snyder and Coach [Ron] Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”

The new name has not been announced, yet.

The team has been under pressure to change its name for decades. This year, the name went through a thorough review July 3 after a dozen Native American leaders wrote NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The Redskins name has offended many Native Americans as derogatory and racist.

Pressure to change the name also came from corporate sponsors and the City of Washington, D.C. who told them the team could not use its stadium until the name was changed.
