Who shot Chevy?

A local Vicksburg family is upset that their family dog, Chevy, was shot by an unknown person and left for dead.
Chevy and her family live near Nailor Road and Tower Drive. Somewhere between 4 and 5:30 p.m. yesterday, Dec. 21, Chevy was shot by an unknown person for an unknown reason. One of Chevy’s family members said in a post on social media “I completely understand people not wanting dogs in their yard, especially if it’s aggressive, but Chevy does not have a mean bone in her body. Contacting the dogs owner or calling the Sheriffs office would have been the right thing to do, not shoot her.”
Warren County does not have a leash law and a homeowner is within their rights to shoot a dog in their yard if they feel threatened. However, state law says, “If a person with malice shall intentionally torture, mutilate, maim, burn, starve or disfigure any domesticated dog or cat, or cause any person to do the same, then he or she shall be guilty of the offense of aggravated cruelty to a dog or cat. [Ms Code 97-41-16]”
The bullet that caused Chevy’s injury went through her right rear hip and exited through the right side of her neck, which means she had her rear facing whoever shot her.
They family wants to know why Chevy was shot.

Chevy is in serious condition, and everything that can be done is being done to save her. In a message to the Vicksburg Daily News, the family said “Rachel Potter has been a godsend … she is awesome. She stayed with Chevy last night til after midnight.” Rachel Potter is a Veterinarian at Animal Medical Clinic on U.S. Highway 61 North.
