Yazoo’s Chief Winstead Resigns, Sheriff to oversee department

Yazoo City Police Chief Jay Winstead submitted his resignation Monday morning.

The Mayor and Board of Alderman have asked Yazoo County Sheriff Jacob Sheriff to serve as Police Chief until a new chief can be hired.

Winstead’s resignation comes following a violent weekend in Yazoo where several people were wounded outside a nightclub Friday night and when an 8-year-old was wounded in a drive-by shooting the following night.

Winstead’s resignation follows a pattern of frequent turnovers in the Chief’s position the past several years.
