Vicksburg High School girl’s basketball player Yakia Burns has won the Missy Gator Award for her outstanding performance last season in basketball.

The award is given to the team’s overall most valuable player and is selected by the VHS coaching staff.

Burns led the Gators to a 20-11 record while averaging 10.8 points per game under head coach Troy Stewart. She also helped VHS reach the class 5A semifinals.

Her best performance this season came in February where she scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds against crosstown rivals Warren Central and led the Gators to a 68-36 victory.

Burns just recently finished her junior year with the Gators which means she will be one of several starters returning to train for a even better season next year.

Coach Stewart announced the award Friday on Facebook. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the school could not hold an athletic banquet.
