Those near the riverfront Friday morning were in for a pleasant sight as the American Duchess riverboat once again docked in Vicksburg. She has not visited Vicksburg since last year, when the coronavirus pandemic halted all cruises along the Mississippi River. Many people see it as a sign that things may be beginning to get back to normal.

The Duchess is part of the American Queen Steamboat Company’s fleet of ships. It docked at 8:00 a.m. and is scheduled to depart this afternoon at 5:00 p.m. She will return to the riverfront on May 24 as part of another chartered trip.

The American Queen Steamboat Company has said that any and all passengers must have received the coronavirus vaccine beginning July 1.

Passengers of today’s excursion will not participate in customary tours of cruises past, but will be given a no-contact tour of the Vicksburg National Military Park.

On March 25, at 8:00 a.m. the American Jazz, part of the American Cruise Lines, is scheduled to arrive at the riverfront and a limited number of 29 guests will be given a tour of the military park.

Passengers of today’s excursion as well as those on trips in the near future will be required to abide by local protocols and civil emergency orders.
