Former Vicksburg High School football player Nick Anderson has been named a Stephen Martin Scholar at Tulane University.

Alanna Austin, a member of the university’s sailing team, was also named as a scholar.

“We are so proud to announce Nick and Alanna as this year’s Stephen Martin Scholars.” Deputy Athletics Director/Chief Operating Officer/Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Mónica Lebrón said Wednesday in a statement. “Their leadership, both in the classroom and amongst their teammates, combined with their commitment to service throughout our Tulane and New Orleans communities made them the clear choices for this year. They exude class which is a word that comes up often when we hear Mr. Martin’s former teammates sharing fond memories of him. Mr. Martin was and will always be special as are Nick and Alanna.”

Candidates for this award are athletes with high academic achievements who show great leadership skills, something Anderson has done throughout his academic and sports career.

Anderson is a starting linebacker for Tulane and has helped the Green Wave to a 5-5 record. The team is one win away from being bowl eligible.
