Vicksburg High School finished their regular season on Thursday with a undefeated district record after beating Holmes County Central 32-16 and they will now join the historic 1984 and 1990 Gator squads that went undefeated in district play.
“This win is awesome for the program and it’s something that we strived to do,” VHS Head Coach Todd McDaniel said.
The Gator defense hit the field first and forced a three and out before blocking the punt to set up good field possession for the offense.
VHS took advantage of the situation as DeCorey Knight Jr. picked up some big rushing yards to setup a short touchdown run by Malik Montgomery.
As the Gators got back on defense, they would force another punt which led to another score when Montgomery broke out for a 35-yard touchdown to put the score at 12-0.
After a sack by Tyler Carter, VHS got the ball back and quarterback Ronnie Alexander hit Johnny Smith for a 69-yard pass to setup a 1-yard touchdown by Montgomery. Tyler Henderson caught the two-point conversion as the Gators was leading the Jaguars 20-0 with 3:37 left before halftime.
With 1:22 left before halftime, Alexander hit Henderson for a 40-yard pass to the one yard line. Knight would get the touchdown on the next play to put the score at 26-0.
The second half of the game consisted of the Gators maintaining their lead as they would score one more time on a run by Johnny Smith.
VHS has now finished their season with a 8-2 record while going 8-0 in district play. Tonight’s win was also VHS’ 600th program win as they will soon be hosting a playoff game.
“We did what we needed to do and that’s how we came out on top,” Montgomery said. I feel good about the playoffs because we now have the momentum.”
