Nettles leads VHS powerlifting team to a district championship

The Vicksburg High School powerlifting team, led by VHS football coach Bubba Nettles, won the District 2 5A championship on Saturday, Feb. 1.

The team was competing against four other schools: Germantown, Holmes County, Ridgeland and Canton.

The Gators had five lifters take first place at the meet which helped them bring home the district title. Dayshon Drayton, Channing Adams Jr., Michael Montgomery Jr., Quinton Rowan and Lucius Chambers all came in first in their classes, sealing the deal for the Gators.

The Gators powerlifters go through a tough practice almost every day after school to get ready for their competitions. They are looking forward to competing in the North State and State competitions in the coming weeks.

VHS lifters who placed in Saturday’s competition:

Cameron Smith: second place 114 weight class.

Quinton Rowan: first place 123 weight class.

Dayshon Drayton: first place 132 weight class.

Nicholas Mickey: third place 132 weight class.

Ramone Brown Jr.: second place 148 weight class.

Keveon Smith Jr.: third place 148 weight class.

Lucius Chambers: first place 165 weight class.

Cedrick Phillips: second place 165 weight class.

Channing Adams Jr.: first place 181 weight class.

Michael Montgomery Jr.: first place super heavyweight class.
