VHS saw a little action in Friday night’s scrimmage

The Vicksburg High School football team saw a little action on Friday before the weather forced them to end their scrimmage early for the second year in a row.

“It sucks for the kids because they are ready to compete but you can’t argue with God,” VHS Head Coach Christopher Lacey said.

The Gator defense held up as usual and the offense found their spark after quarterback Ronnie Alexander hit Malik Montgomery for a 30-yard pass. He also broke out on a 21-yard scramble along with hitting DeCorey Knight Jr. and Tyler Henderson with quick passes that picked up positive yards.

On the defensive side, Keegan Ware provided some good coverage while Jadarius Henderson and Demarcus Johnson grabbed some tough tackles.

“A lot of those guys out there are veterans like Dennis Battle because he was out there dissecting screens and everything and we’re  implementing a new offense so we’re just working on a lot of new stuff,” Lacey said.

Later on in the scrimmage, upcoming sophomore Mikey Johnson broke free for an 18-yard rushing touchdown just shortly after Charles Brooks picked up a 60-yard run.

“We got a new offense and we’re working on our game every day so we have no choice but to be great,” Johnson said.

The Gators will begin their season on August 25 by hosting Holmes County Central at the Red Carpet Bowl.

”We ready for the season right now and I’m feeling good so we just gone get through the summer and go from there,” Alexander said.
