Vicksburg sisters start project to help women in need

Vicksburg natives and sisters Asia and Laila Brown have started a project raising funds and collecting women’s feminine products for women in the community.

Asia, who attends Spelman College, came up with the bright idea last month to start the project which is called 601 For Period Equity.

“One in four women don’t have the products that they need, so plenty of individuals such as homeless women are forced to used to use anything they can find such as rags and grocery bags when it’s that time of the month,” Asia said.

“Young girls are also forced to miss school several days a month due to them not being able afford or get access to period products and young girls shouldn’t have to suffer in silence,” Asia added.

601 For Period Equity focuses on collecting feminine products such as tampons, panty liners and any other products that could help women who can’t afford period products.

Asia and Laila set a combined goal to put together 500 women’s care packages by July 2021, and they almost surpassed that goal in less than a month. They have already put together 430 care packages.

Within the first month of the project, the Brown sisters have donated care packages to the Warren County Children’s Shelter, Warren Central Intermediate School, Hinds Community College Upward Bound Program and Grace House for Women in Jackson, Mississippi.

Now that the project has gotten off to a successful start, Jackson native and North Carolina A&T student, Maisie Brown, also stepped in to help with 601 For Period Equity in the Jackson area to help the good cause expand.

“Our goal is to serve most of the state,” Brown said. “We want to expand as much as possible to give women a chance to get the care products they need.”

601 For Period Equity is currently accepting donations, and those who wish to contribute or find out more about the program can visit their website at https://linktr.ee/601forperiodequity.
