Vicksburg’s most haunted

Spooky season has arrived, and many enjoy celebrating with a good old-fashioned scare.

Believers in the paranormal say that Vicksburg’s violent history has thinned the veil between this world and the next. Check out the top five haunted locations in the Vicksburg area, if you dare.

Vicksburg National Military Park

Walk the very ground where thousands of soldiers perished. Many visitors have reported seeing ghosts, smelling gunpowder and even hearing cannon fire and the scream’s of long-dead soldiers echoing through the park.

McRaven Tour Home

What started as a family home for an expectant couple in the 1800s would eventually become Mississippi’s most haunted house. Take a ghost tour, and you might encounter several ghostly apparitions lingering on the grounds.

McNutt House

One of the oldest homes in Vicksburg, the McNutt House is now a bed and breakfast. Stay in the home where many have reported seeing the ghost of a little girl named Maggie. One hour tours are also available to learn about the home’s history.

King’s Tavern

King’s Tavern in Natchez is the oldest building in the oldest city on the Mississippi River. Locals say that three skeletons were discovered in the walls. Sightings of a red-headed man in a top hat have been reported, but the most famous ghost of the tavern is Madeline, a mischievous spirit said to suddenly appear in windows and mirrors on the property.

Rowan Oak

If you’re into literature, take the 3-hour trip to Oxford. It’s where the home of novelist William Faulkner is located. Some people claim to see Faulkner’s ghost roaming the property to this day, writing on the walls of his office. You can visit the house from dawn until dusk all year long.
