Former USM punter Ray Guy is selected to All-Time All-America team
Former University of Southern Mississippi punter Ray Guy was selected for the All-Time All-America team. Guy played at Southern Miss from 1970 to 1972.
The selection came about from ESPN’s celebration of 150 years of college football. “Their presence on the field changed the game,” ESPN said of the 25 honorees, who spanned 90 years of college football.
Before entering in the 1973 NFL draft, Guy lettered in football and baseball at USM. Guy averaged 44 yards per punt during his years as a Golden Eagle, and he also played safety for USM’s defense with 18 interceptions in three years.
Guy eventually went on to play in the NFL for 13 seasons, becoming a seven-time Pro Bowler. In 2014, he became the first true punter inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and now there is an award given in his name to the best college punter each year.
