Morehouse College in Atlanta has canceled its 2020 football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cross country has also been canceled.

Morehouse President David A. Thomas announced that the school would still honor the athletes’ scholarships although they will not be competing this year.

“I know this news will be most disappointing to our scholar-athletes, especially our seniors,” Thomas wrote in an open letter posted on the school website. “I can only ask for your understanding and respect for the fact that the College is prioritizing your health and safety ahead of all else. We are committed to the principle that our athletes are first and foremost students.”

Although the football season is cancelled for Morehead College, the school has not made a decision on spring sports, yet.

Morehouse was to begin its 2020 football season Sept. 5 against Edward Waters College.
