USM in search for week three game after SWAC postpones season
The University of Southern Mississippi is in search for a week three game because the Golden Eagles will not be playing Jackson State University this season.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference, which includes JSU, pushed back its season to the spring, causing cancellation of the game.
USM made an announcement Tuesday that the school is in talks with other programs to see if they can fill the open spot.
“We were recently made aware of the SWAC’s decision to cancel all athletic competition for the fall, and this, obviously, impacts several of our sports, including our Sept. 19 home football contest against Jackson State,” Athletic Director Jeremy McClain said in a statement.
“We have been in discussions with several programs and are working towards filling that date at ‘The Rock’ with another game.”
USM and JSU were scheduled to play Sept. 19 but as of now, there will not be a game until the Golden Eagles can schedule another team to play. The last time the two teams met was in 2018, and USM won 55-7.
